SHELBY TWP., Mich. – Moving north.
In its inaugural campaign in 2024, Union FC Macomb men’s soccer team played 14 league games in the USL League Two with their seven home games split between Utica Swinehart Stadium next door to Utica High School and Waren De La Salle Collegiate. This year, Union will have a new home.
Romeo High School will play host to each of Union FC Macomb’s home matches in both men’s soccer and women’s soccer in 2025, as Romeo High has rebuilt its entire athletics complex over the last decade and now boasts some of the best athletics facilities in the entire Metropolitan Detroit region.
Both Union FC Macomb’s second-year men’s team, which competes in the USL League Two, and inaugural women’s team, which will compete in the USL W League this spring and summer, will contest their home games in the Romeo’s main athletics stadium on site, the Dan Barnabo Field, while also doing most of their training there as well.
Romeo High School moved to its present location in 2017 at 62300 Jewell Rd in Washington Twp., some three miles southeast of downtown Romeo, after some major renovations to the former Romeo Engineering and Technology Center at that location. All of the athletics facilities on site have gone through major reconstruction, including Barnabo Field and the encompassing track, as well as adjacent practice fields, baseball and softball fields, tennis courts and inside the school building with its gymnasium/field house and natatorium.
Already coaching at the high school, located about three miles southeast of downtown Romeo, Vasilevski already has a great working relationship with the high school athletics department and school district in general. With newer facilities and a large parking lot adjacent to the athletics stadium at Romeo High School, the move was another perfect fit.
“I already coach up there (with Romeo High’s boys soccer team) and Union FC Macomb was looking for a community in Macomb – a community we could work with. There isn’t a more sports fanatic city in Macomb County,” offered Vinnie Vasilevski, Union FC Macomb’s new general manager from Union FC Macomb’s offices in Shelby Twp. “So, I’m excited to work with some of the local places and kind of build up that crowd out there and build that fan base. A lot of people are moving out there and I love that. Romeo has been home to me for almost 10 years. I think there’s not a better place to showcase what (Union FC) Macomb is all about. A lot of blue-collar people that live in Romeo that are about working hard and putting their best foot forward. That’s what we’re trying to do.”
Gronthik Chatterjee, the Union FC Macomb men’s head coach and one of the club’s founders, CEO and President, expounded on the choice of moving home games and training up to Romeo High School. The new Romeo High moved form the west side of downtown Romeo, an bustling blue-collar community on the northern end of suburban Detroit, over to a new location eight years ago and is one of the top high school athletics complexes in the Detroit area.
“That’s part of the (team) badge, as those hammers are there. There’s kind of a work ethic here in Metro Detroit and that all kind of fits into the community that we’re from,” added Chatterjee. “To add to that, I think the facilities at Romeo are fantastic. I think our facilities last year at Swinhart (Stadium) were great and the few games we did at (Warren) De La Salle (the facilities) were great. But the facilities at Swinehart are going away as they are going to be under construction, and so just going out and checking out the new facilities and what Romeo has to offer – it’s absolutely fantastic. It’s going to be a wonderful home to us. The downtown (Romeo) is right there only a couple of miles away. It’s a great environment for us to showcase our talent, and two it’s a great place for visitors to come to. The amenities and what we can offer are wonderful.”
