DETROIT —Detroit City Football Club announced the acquisition of Canadian midfielder Jay Chapman via transfer from fellow USL Championship club Hartford Athletic. Following the transfer, Chapman signed a new deal with Le Rouge, which will see him in the Rouge in Gold for the 2025 USL Championship season.

The Brampton, Ontario native joins Le Rouge after spending the 2024 season with Hartford Athletic and Charleston Battery. Chapman would appear in 17 matches for the Connecticut-based club before being sent out on loan to Charleston in August. In his 15 games with the club, Chapman would help lead Battery to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Before the move to Hartford, Chapman spent the 2023 season with Western Conference side Colorado Springs Switchbacks. The midfielder played 28 out of a possible 34 games. Chapman picked up his first-ever USL Championship goal against Monterey Bay FC on August 26th, as it was Colorado Springs’ only goal on the day in a 2-1 loss.

Jay Chapman took his career internationally in 2022, joining Scottish Premiership club Dundee FC in the January transfer window. However, he only made two appearances for The Dark Blues, who were relegated from the Premiership. Chapman then left Dundee by mutual consent in October after paperwork issues affected his status for the 2022-23 season.

Before heading to Europe, Chapman spent the first seven years of his professional career in Major League Soccer. He then spent two seasons with Inter Miami CF in 2020 and 2021, playing 33 games over Miami’s first two seasons as a club.

Before heading south, Chapman spent five seasons within the Toronto FC system. Chapman would spend time between the MLS team and their USL side, Toronto FC II. Over the five seasons, Chapman would play a total of 103 for the two clubs, with 88 of those matches being with the MLS club. He scored a total of nine goals and seven assists for both. Throughout his time with the MLS side, the club would win three Canadian Cups, one Supporters Shield, and the MLS Cup in 2017. Chapman would also see appearances at the continental level, as he played 19 minutes in the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions League Final in 2017, in which Toronto lost 4-2 on penalties to Chivas Guadalajara.

His success with the Toronto-based side garnered attention from the Canadian National Team. Chapman has three caps with the Canada men’s national team, two in 2017 and one in 2020. The midfielder scored one goal at the international level, a goal in a 4-2 victory in a friendly win against Bermuda.

Chapman played college soccer at Michigan State University in East Lansing. Over three seasons, he appeared in 64 matches for the Spartans. In his senior year, 2014, he was named a First-Team All-American, becoming the first Spartan to achieve first-team honors since 1970. Chapman was also the Big Ten Midfielder of the Year and a 2014 MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist, the first Spartan ever to be a semifinalist. His first season in 2012 saw him help the Spartans to a Big Ten Tournament championship and an NCAA tournament appearance. In both seasons, 2013 and 2014, Chapman would play an integral role in the Spartans advancing to the Elite Eight.
