CHICAGO – U.S. Soccer announced this month that there are some changes forthcoming regarding its Referee Abuse Prevention Policy (Policy 531-9). The updated policy will take effect on March 1, 2025.
This policy amendment is designed to make the environment of soccer matches and tournaments more safe and empowering for everyone involved in youth-club soccer, amateur/pre-professional soccer and all US. National teams for soccer in the U.S. The updated policy is to protect referees and restore respect to the game of soccer and includes stronger sanctions for any form of physical or non-physical abuse towards referees in all contests that take place in sanctioned leagues and tournaments across the country.
The amended policy now includes a more detailed penalties matrix for players, coaches, parents and spectators to follow and to adhere to its strict guidelines. The non-physical offenses include verbal taunting, harassment/intimidation, and offensive acts, while physical offenses include minor touching, intentional confrontation, and violent contact.
All leagues, clubs and franchises that fall under the U.S. Soccer jurisdiction have been issued the Referee Abuse Prevention Policy with its amendments and reporting system.
State and national governing bodies for high school athletics and national governing bodies for collegiate athletics already have their own individual policies in place regarding referee/officials abuse for both soccer and all other sports under their respective platforms and individual rules and regulations parameters and are not under U.S. Soccer guidelines and jurisdiction.
