SATURDAY’S PREP GIRLS SOCCER ROUNDUP: Shrine upsets North Muskegon; Okemos upsets Marian; St. Francis remains unbeaten


NORTH MUSKEGON, Mich. -- State-ranked Royal Oak Shrine knocked Division 4 top-ranked North Muskegon off its perch with a 3-1 non-conference road win Saturday.

Senior Julia Bock had a goal and an assist to pace the Knights. Senior Catherine Murray and junior Isobel Malcom also scored for Shrine.

Senior Elena Gallagher gained the win in goal for the Knights (6-2-4). Shrine owns a 28-10 scoring edge this season with five of its 12 games against larger Division 2 or Division 3 schools.

 

North Muskegon (9-2-0) saw its six-game win streak come to an end. The Norsemen had not lost since April 12, when they were defeated by Division 2 top-ranked Spring Lake 4-0.

 

North Muskegon still owns a 47-13 scoring edge on the season.

 

OKEMOS 2, BIRMINGHAM MARIAN 0: Marian tasted defeat for only the second time this season Saturday in Okemos, as the Chieftains recorded this 2-0 victory over the Mustangs. The game was the annual Compete for a Cause contest. Calle Guggemos and Avani Pavangadkar scored the goals, Elaina Tapscott had an assist and Mattie Thompson recorded the shutout for the Chieftains. Panya Gross, Maude Lewis, Karissa Theiss and Allison Korb starred defensively for Okemos.

TRAVERSE CITY ST. FRANCIS LIBERTY UNIFIED 3, HOLLAND 0: Liliana David, Riley Collins and Sidney Peters scored goals for St. Francis, which remained unbeaten at 9-0-1 overall following this non-league won over Holland, which comes from the Grand Rapids area. Pasleigh Upshaw recorded 20 saves on the afternoon.

 

MUSKEGON MONA SHORES 3, SALEM 1: Mona Shores rebounded from a loss earlier in the week with this East-West Showcase victorying a game featuring two Division 1 state-ranked teams. Shay Norden scored twice, Ava Frye added a goal and an assists, and both Katie Phillips and Olivia Naylor drew assists in the contest. Jersey VanderWall made four saves as Mona Shores (11-2-1) outshot Salem 10-5.

 

BERKLEY 3, MUSKEGON MONA SHORES 1: Berkley caught state-ranked Mona Shiores napping early Saturday morning in this East-West Showcase, scoring three first-half goals and holding on for the victory. Ella Kinney scored for the Sailors off a cross from Addison Fisher and Jersey Vanderwall made one save for Mona Shores, which outshot Berkley 11-4 but conceded the early three goals. The Sailors were 7-0-1 in their last eight games coming into the contest.

 

TROY ATHENS 2, TRAVERSE CITY WEST 0: The Red Hawks recorded their 10th shutout of the season Saturday at the Traverse City West Invitational. The annual four-school event featured Athens and Rochester from the Oakland Activities Association Red Division and both the host Titans and Traverse City Central from the big North Conference. Athens holds a 27-4 scoring edge on the campaign and moved to 9-2-2 on the year.

 

ROCHESTER 4, TRAVERSE CITY CENTRAL 0: The Falcons recorded another shutout on the day and improved to 9-4-2 overall with the win over the Trojans at the Traverse City West Invitational.

 

ROCHESTER 3, TRAVERSE CITY WEST 0: Rochester opened up the Traverse City West Invitational with this shutout win over the host Titans.
