SHELBY TWP., Mich. – Much like during the high school boys soccer season in Michigan last fall, there was plenty of movement across the state in terms of conference re-alignments.
There is far more on tap for the 2025 high school girls soccer season in the Great Lake State, as more than 50 high schools in the state have been placed and will be contend for different conference championships this spring.
For the first time, both the Big 8 Conference and the Jack Pine Conference will play a league schedule for girls soccer in the spring 2025 season. The Big 8 Conference now has five schools that sponsor girls soccer, which is the minimum for a varsity sport in that south central Michigan-based area league. Several schools with programs entered the Jack Pine Conference this year, making eight of the 12 schools now with girls soccer programs.
Two new conferences that have been formed include the Northern Shores Conference and the River Cities Alliance Conference. The Northern Shores is a collection of schools from several leagues, including the dissolved Lake Michigan Conference which disbanded last June. All seven members of the Cities Alliance departed the Ottawa Kent Conference last summer to form a new seven-school league.
The Ottawa Kent Conference in the Grand Rapids-Muskegon area conducted a complete overhaul of its six divisions, announcing those changes during the 2023-24 school year. The OKC-Blue Division has been replaced by the OKC-Black Division, while the OKC-Red, OKC-White, OKC-Green, OKC-Gold and OKC-Silver Divisions all saw a shuffling of schools based on performances in all sports. In terms of soccer, there are 22 different schools that shuffled to different divisions within the OKC for this school year and next school year as well.
Some of the other mega conferences in the state have seen movement in their respective divisions when it comes to girls soccer. Several different schools witched divisions in the five-division Macomb Area Conference, which will realign every school year for the foreseeable future. The Oakland Activities Association did not see any notable changes to its top division, the OAA Red Division, but saw some movement within its other three divisions.
Up in the thumb region, the Big Thumb Conference emerged last summer with a collection of schools from three different leagues, two which dissolved into the new mega conference with some other school also jumping over to the new BTC.
The only five schools in the Upper Peninsula that sponsor girls soccer will play a league schedule as the Upper Peninsula Soccer League.
There are at least three new programs in the state – Dearborn Heights Annapolis, McBain and Stevensville Berrien County Home School – that now have girls soccer, plus several other charter, public or parochial schools that are trying to bring back the sport after being on hiatus in recent years.
