MASL: Tacoma Stars pull away late to cool Harrisburg Heat

TACOMA, Wash. – Sometimes it’s all about how you finish.


Behind three unanswered goals in the fourth quarter, the Tacoma Stars were able to pull away Friday night for an 8-4 MASL victory over the Harrisburg Heat at the ShoWare Arena.


The Stars, which never trailed, held a 5-4 lead early in the fourth quarter after the Heat scored two early goals in the frame, closed out with the three goals o er a 9:26 span to close the lights out on the Heat.


Tyler John extended the lead to 6-4 with a goal off a Matt Braem pass at the 5:10 mark of the fourth period.


Nick Perera upped the lead to 7-5 when finished off a cross from Willie Spurr at 11:50, while Kyle Rivers capped the scoring with 24 seconds remaining with a late goal courtesy of Braem.


The Stars never trailed, taking a 1-0 lead at 7:39 with Michael Ramos banging home a shot off a Nani Mendoza pass.

The Heat did have an answer just 29 seconds into the second quarter off a goal from Mike Da Silva and a Noe Favila helper.


Tacoma regained the lead at 2-1 at the 7:44 mark of the second when Fellipe Souza deposited a pass from Perera only to see Harrisburg tie it again at the 13:21 mark of the second frame when Da Silva answered again courtesy of a Anthony Wright pass.


The Stars responded with a 3-0 run and never trailed. Kyle Rivers put Tacoma up for good at 3-2 when he netted the go-ahead goal off a cross from Michael Ramos at 13:32 of the second quarter.


Perera and Tyler John scored at 7:35 and the 8:13 marks of the third frame to push the lead up to5-2 before the Heat began to claw back.


Malcom Harris scored a pair of unassisted goals at 1:43 and 4:59 of the fourth quarter, but that was all the offense Harrisburg could muster on this night.


The Heat are back in action Feb.16 with another date with the Tacoma Stars at 8:05 p.m. EST Sunday in Harrisburg.
