CHIHUAHUA, Mexico – Slowing down a team as the Chihuahua Savage’s caliber is never an easy task.
Especially when playing on the road at the Corner Sport Arena in downtown Chihuahua.
Chihuahua got some sweet measure of revenge Friday night against the San Diego Sockers, exploding for a 6-0 run over parts of the first and second quarters and cruising to an 8-5 Major Arena Soccer League victory over a team that defeated the Savage earlier this season (6-4).
The game was the first-ever English broadcast conducted for a Chihuahua home game. The broadcast event was put on by the Premier Media Group and the National Soccer Network at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0l7oCakS-8 .
Jorge Rios scored two goals and added two assists for good measure for the Savage, with Rios remaining second in the league in goals (21) and top 10 in assists (13) following the high-production night.
San Deigo led early 1-0 and 2-1 before the Savage got untracked and began to unleash the fury on the Sockers’ backline and goalkeepers.
Seven of the eight Savage goals were scored in the first and second quarters and six goals were scored between the 5:06 mark of the first period and 12:17 of the second quarter – a span of 24:11 of game clock in the 60-minute affair.
Carlos Hernandez tied the game at 2-2 just 5:06 into the contest for Chihuahua off a pass from Jaime Alejandro-Romero. The floodgates opened temporarily after that point.
Erick Tovar put the Savage (14-2-0) into the driver’s seat at 3-2 at the 7:40 mark when he blasted home a feed from Rios, who now has 34 points on the campaign.
The outburst was not complete.
Javier Gallegos upped the lead to 4-2 at 9:42 of the first period off an assist from – you guessed it – Rios.
Early in the second quarter, Rios got involved in the scoring column with a pair of goals. His first came off a Brandon Gonzalez helper just 1:02 into the second quarter, while the second came at the 5:32 mark of the second stanza and this time the tally was unassisted.
By that time, the Savage were up comfortably at 6-2.
Gallegos set up Chihuahua’s sixth unanswered goal when Roberto Escalante found the back of the net at 12:17 of the second frame – good for the 7-2 halftime advantage.
San Diego tightened the reigns defensively in the second half and played much more inspired soccer over the final two quarters of play. The Sockers kept Chihuahua’s high-powered engine in the third quarter but it was not enough to overcome the five-goal deficit at the break.
Ismael Rojo snapped San Diego’s scoring drought at 6:16 of the third quarter when he slipped home a cross from Gabriel Costa, while Costa banged home a feed from Luiz Morales just 23 seconds into the fourth quarter to bring the Sockers (11-4) to within 7-4.
Chihuahua had the answer with its eighth goal of the contest, this time with Romero ripping home a shot following a long pass from Christian Hernandez at 8:47 of the fourth stanza.
San Diego’s Sebastian Mendez capped the game’s scoring with a late goal at 13:55 courtesy of a Jhon Ponce helper. The tally came with six attackers but also came much too late to fuel a serious comeback.
Moments into the high-energy contest, it was the foot of Rojo who put the Sockers up 1-0 early at 2:12 of the first stanza which finished off a nice cross from Brandon Escoto.
Alejandro-Romero, who finished with a goal and two assists for Chihuahua, knotted the game at 1-1 just 54 seconds later for the Savage.
San Diego countered again and took its last lead with 3:35 of the first period, with Costa setting up Hugo Puentes with a banger for the 2-1 advantage.
Chihuahua amped up the high-pressure on the offensive end and began the game-changing 6-0 run after that point.
The Savage outshot the Sockers 50-42 in the contest in improving its 10-point lead over the Sockers (40-30 points) in the MASL standings. Christian Hernandez was the winning goalkeeper for the Savage, recording four saves while allowing just three of the five San Diego goals.
