ONTARIO, Calif. – Pedro Castaneda came through in the clutch Wednesday evening.
The Chihuahua Savage forward scored his only goal with 8:03 remaining in the fourth quarter, as the visiting Savage held off host Empire Strykers 6-5 Wednesday night in front of 1,723 fans at Toyota Arena.
The Savage (13-2-0) never trailed, although the host Strykers (6-8-1) tied it twice during the game at 3-3 and again at 5-5, respectively, before Castaneda drilled home his shot in the fourth stanza, which proved to be eventual the game-winner.
Six different players scored for the Savage, which also had three different players also record assists.
Alan Perez netted the hat trick for Empire, while Marco Fabian added a goal and two assists in the defeat.
Chihuahua grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the first quarter after converting three times in the opening 7:37 of the first frame. Martin Lara (2:42), Luis Medrano (5:57) and Bryan Macias (7:37) all scored for the Savage to help open up the three-goal advantage.
Empire struck back to knot the score at 3-3 by the early minutes of the second quarter. Fabian (11:01) and Perez (14:43) scored in the first quarter for the Strykers while Perez netted his second tally of the evening just 2:02 into the second quarter for the 3-3 stalemate at the half.
Chihuahua had the answer once again, scoring a power-play goal just 58 seconds into the third quarter for a 4-3 advantage on a goal by Jorge Rios and then followed with a goal by Jaime Alejandro Romero at the 7:18 mark of the period to go up 5-3.
The Strykers did not go quietly into the good night, as they gained a goal back at the 11:18 mark of the third quarter off a tally by Perez, while Leonardo Espinoza tied the game at 5-5 just 1:01 into the fourth quarter.
Empire could not strike again, while the Savage rang the go-ahead bell with Castaneda’s goal down the stretch.
Both Javier Gallegos and Carlos Hernandez added two assists apiece for the Savage, while Hugo Puentes contributed a single helper for Chihuahua.
Robert Palmer, Leopoldo Polo Hernandez, Jorge DeLeon and Andy Reyes added single assists for the Strykers.
Chihuahua outshot Empire 24-22 in the match.
