Like all levels of soccer in the U.S., high school soccer never sleeps.
As several states are winding down the winter season of high school soccer, several states will begin the 2025 spring season for girls soccer.
With players already starting preseason practices in late February or into early or mid-March, there are 17 states expected to play high school girls soccer in the spring – Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
STATE-BY-STATE BREAKDOWN OF FALL, WINTER AND SPRING HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER SEASONS
Below is the breakdown by seasons of high school boys soccer and high school girls soccer in reference to which seasons the main state governing bodies for high school athletics competes in those sports specifically. This may or not include some state home school, Christian schools associations or private school associations in respective states as a majority of those governing bodies hold their boys soccer and girls soccer seasons at the same time. California has both a north and south association for all sports, while Washington D.C. also has small tournaments for several sports as well, including soccer.
An example would be Michigan, where the Michigan High School Athletic Association (four divisions), Michigan Association of Christian Schools (two divisions), Michigan Christian Schools Athletic Association (one division) and Michigan Home Schools Sports Association (one division) compete in boys soccer in the fall months, while the Michigan High School Athletic Association (four divisions), Michigan Association of Christian Schools (one division), Michigan Christian Schools Athletic Association (one division) and Michigan Home Schools Sports Association (one division) compete in girls soccer in the spring months. The only difference is with the Michigan home schools holding a conjoined tournament with Indiana for girls soccer in the late spring months due to minimal teams competing.
Every other state has different layers of divisions and classifications that compete in different seasons for boys soccer and girls soccer. For boys soccer there are 32 states that compete in the fall, 12 states in the winter and eight states in the spring, while with girls soccer there are 28 states that compete in the fall, seven states which compete in the winter and 17 states that compete in the spring months. That again includes the two California associations and one for Washington D.C.
