ST. LOUIS, Mo. – On this day, Michael Adedokun stood alone atop the podium.

The Ohio State University senior midfielder from Eruwa, Nigeria, was named the winner of the 2024 MAC Hermann Trophy Friday by the United Soccer Coaches and the Missouri Athletics Club at a banquet held at the MAC in St. Louis, Missouri. The MAC Hermann Trophy, the highest individual honor in NCAA Division I men’s soccer, has been awarded annually since 1967.Adedokun, a USC All-American First Team selection, led the Buckeyes and the Big Ten in 2024 with 11 goals, 11 assists and 33 points. He helped Ohio State to a 16-2-4 overall record and to the program's second appearance in the NCAA Division I College Cup Final Four.

There were 15 candidates for the Hermann entering the postseason, while there became three finalists for the prestigious award. Adedokun was joined by University of Denver senior midfielder Sam Bassett (Littleton, Colo.) and University of Akron graduate forward Emil Jaaskelainen (Bolton, England) as the remaining trio for the award.

Adedokun led the Buckeyes and the Big Ten Conference with 33 points, 11 goals and 11 assists as Ohio State University advanced to the College Cup semifinals. Bassett played and started in all 23 matches to lead the Pioneers back to the College Cup for the first time since 2016, producing a team-high 31 points on a joint-team-high nine goals and a team-high 13 assists. Bassett holds Denver’s career (26) and single-season records in assists. Jaaskelainen started all 21 games for Akron in 2024 enroute to recording an NCAA-best 23 goals and 54 points, while also leading the nation in game-winning goals (six), goals per game (1.10) and points per game (2.57).

Back in Columbus, Adedokun helped the Buckeyes earned the program's first No. 1 ranking entering the postseason and No. 1 overall seed in the 2024 NCAA Tournament in 2024. Ohio State won the 2024 Big Ten Tournament as the No. 1 seed and shared the league's regular-season title with Adedokun leading the way.

In the 2024 postseason, Adedokun scored three goals on 18 shots in six matches (5-1). He put seven shots on net and had two game-winning scores. The Big Ten coaches named Adedokun the league's 2024 Midfielder of the Year and to the All-Big Ten First Team. Ohio State graduate defender Siggi Magnusson was also a First Team All-Big Ten selection in 2024 and joined Adedokun as one of 15 MAC Hermann Trophy Semifinalists. Ohio State was one of three universities with two semifinalists in 2024.

Brian Maisonneuve, the head coach of the Buckeyes, earned the MAC Hermann Trophy in 1994 following his senior season at Indiana University.

Adedokun spent three years at the University of Dayton from 2020-2022. Adedokun is the first OSU player to earn the award.

He played in nine games as a freshman in 2020-21 while in 2021-22 he competed in nine games and finished with a goal and two assists for the Flivvers. Adedokun really started to shine at Dayton in the 2022-23 season, playing in 11 matches with six starts and contributed three goals with six assists. He eventually earned All-Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament Team honors before transferring up to Ohio State.

In the 2023 campaign, Adedokun started in 13 of 16 games where he made appearances and contributed three goals with two assists for eight points. That set the stage for his fifth-year/Covid season where he earned numerous postseason accolades.

During the summer of 2023, Adedokun was a key player for the Flint City Bucks of the USL-League Two, helping the team win the Great Lakes Division and Central Conference championships before advancing to the USL-League Two North American Final Four that season.

While growing up in Nigeria, Adedokun attended Eruwa-Segun Odegbami High School, where he played for the school and was a four-year letter-winner during his prep days along with playing club soccer in that country. He eventually was recruited to play college soccer over in the U.S.
