INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Canada defeated the United States 2-1 in the Concacaf Nations League third-place match on Sunday at SoFi Stadium, marking the first time in nearly four decades that Canada has secured back-to-back wins over its North American rival.
Canadian forward Tani Oluwaseyi opened the scoring with his first international goal after captain Alphonso Davies exited in the 12th minute due to an apparent ankle injury. Despite the early loss of Davies, Canada maintained composure and applied pressure in the attacking third.
The United States equalized in the 35th minute when Patrick Agyemang finished off a setup by Diego Luna. However, Canada's Jonathan David scored the game-winner in the 59th minute, recording his 32nd career international goal — the most in Canadian men’s national team history.
Tensions flared midway through the second half when Canada had two penalty appeals waved off. Canadian head coach Jesse Marsch was ejected following protests from the bench.
The defeat marks a historic low point for the U.S. men’s national team. It is the first time the Americans have lost consecutive home games to Canada since the two sides began meeting in 1925. The U.S. also lost its semifinal match to Panama, finishing the tournament in fourth place — a concerning result with the 2026 World Cup, which the U.S. will co-host, less than 15 months away.
Canada, meanwhile, capped the tournament on a high note, showcasing resilience and depth in the face of adversity.
